How to Prepare for Your New French Bulldog Puppy
So you’re getting a new French Bulldog puppy!
In this article, I will discuss how to properly prepare for the arrival of a new French Bulldog puppy.
Welcoming a new addition to your family is undoubtedly an exciting occasion; however, it can also bring about a certain level of apprehension, particularly when preparing for a new puppy. Whether you are a first-time French Bulldog owner, feeling uncertain about how your new puppy will integrate with an existing French Bulldog, or simply seeking to deepen your understanding of the breed, this guide is tailored to address your needs.
The process of raising a French Bulldog puppy can indeed present unique challenges, as they are recognized for their distinctive care requirements. Drawing from personal experience, I understand the concerns that often accompany this journey. My goal is to provide you with comprehensive information and practical advice to ensure a smooth transition as you welcome your new French Bulldog puppy into your home and family.

Puppy-proofing your home
To keep your new French bulldog puppy and your home safe, take a look around and remove anything that could be a danger. Tuck away electrical cords, chargers, shoes, and any valuables. Also, move items that might be toxic to your pup, like certain houseplants or cleaning supplies.
French Bulldog puppies are naturally curious and love to explore their new home. While it’s good for them to get comfortable, it’s a smart idea to give them a smaller area to call their own at first. This way, they can get used to it, have everything they need close by, and start feeling at home.
Find a vet!
Chat with your go-to French Bulldog breeder for tips, check out local online forums, and so on. Finding a vet who actually *gets* the breed is super important.
What you need:
- Adjustable crate. A crate is a must-have! It’s like your dog’s little safe zone where they can chill and feel totally secure. Plus, it helps set boundaries and makes potty training so much easier. Just make sure it’s a happy, comfy spot they love hanging out in. I’d go for a medium size—it’s usually just right.
- Harness, collar, and leash. Gotta have these essentials! Collars are great for ID tags (don’t forget to include your phone number), but a lot of Frenchie owners prefer using a harness for walks. Both have their pros and cons, but personally, I’m a fan of harnesses—they’re super helpful for leash training and teaching good manners.
- ID tag/updated microchip info. Seriously, don’t skip these—your dog should never be out and about without proper ID. Safety first!
- Food and bowls. Your puppy will already be on Blackhawk food when they come home, so stick with that at first. Chat with your vet during their first appointment to decide if you want to switch them to something else. I personally stick to Blackhawk and raw homekill mince—it works great for me and my dogs!
- Grooming gear. Even though Frenchies have pretty short coats, they do shed. So grab a good brush, some shampoo, and maybe some pet or baby wipes. A rubber-bristled brush or shedding blade will be your best friend for keeping their coat healthy and your home less hairy. Regular brushing = happy dog and happy you!
- Toys. So. Many. Toys. Your little Frenchie will be teething and probably trying to nibble on everything (including you). Stock up on safe chew toys and stuffed animals. I’m obsessed with Snuggle Puppy toys—they’re fun for playtime and also super comforting for your pup when they’re feeling a little anxious or overwhelmed by all the new stuff going on.
